Noah Media’s documentary about Dundalk FC legend Jimmy Hasty was awarded with a Sports Emmy in New York on Tuesday evening.
‘One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty’ was nominated in the Outstanding Short Documentary category, along with works by NFL Films, MSG and ESPN.
The 27-minute film, which was released last April, tells the story of the Lilywhites centre-forward who overcame the amputation of his left arm as a 14-year-old to go on and lead Dundalk to the league title and a history-making achievement in Europe in 1963.
Eleven years later, on October 11th, 1974, Jimmy became a victim of The Troubles when he was gunned down at point-blank range by a paramilitary on the streets of Belfast. He died at the age of 38.
The film includes contributions from Jimmy’s former Dundalk teammates John Murphy, Davy McArdle and Francie Callan, audio excerpts from the late Jim Malone – the man who brought Jimmy to Oriel Park – and interviews with Jimmy’s wife Margaret Sheppard, and his sons Paul and Martin.
Director Rich Milway and Noah Media CEO John McKenna took to the stage at the 45th Annual Sports Emmys at the Lincoln Centre on Broadway to collect the award with Rich dedicating the win to Jimmy’s wife.
“It’s a huge honour to collect this award,” said Milway. “I’d like to say a big thank you to executive producer Chris Peilow, who discovered the story of Jimmy, and to Alex Ingham and Phil Williams from UEFA who really championed this story.
“To everyone who worked on it, Paul Foster, Kess Bohan and Karen Johnson for their hard work and skill.
“I’d also like to thank Dundalk FC. Jimmy played with the club and Dundalk FC and the Malone family helped us so much with the production of this.
“I’d like to thank the Hasty family; Jimmy’s sons Paul and Martin and his wife Margaret. It’s 50 years since Jimmy was killed and this was the first time that Margaret spoke about Jimmy’s death. She did so with amazing grace and courage and I’d like to dedicate this award to her.”
