April 7th, 2002 is a day that will live long in the memory of Dundalk supporters far and wide.
On a bright, sunny Sunday afternoon in Drumcondra, Garry Haylock’s double sank a Bohemians side – managed by a certain Stephen Kenny – to secure the Lilywhites a ninth FAI Cup win.
To mark the occasion, we’ve put together this special podcast where we caught up with Martin Murray, an intrinsic part of Turlough O’Connor’s 1988 double-winning Dundalk team who later returned to Oriel Park as manager ahead of the 2000/2001 season and led the Lilywhites to promotion before guiding them to the cup win a year later.
We also sat down with John Whyte and Cormac Malone, who both forced their way into the squad towards the second half of the season and played a key part in the cup run. John started the game at full-back while Cormac came on as a late substitute.
A huge word of thanks to the three lads for taking the time to chat about a memorable occasion. The squad will hold a reunion at our upcoming league game with Sligo Rovers on Friday, April 18th where we look forward to seeing them back at Oriel, 20 years on from one of our most famous days.
