A relative unknown when he arrived at Oriel Park in the winter of 2012, Patrick Hoban has gone on to write his name into the club’s record books.

Born in Loughrea, Co Galway, ‘Pat’ began his career at Mervue United, cutting his teeth in the League of Ireland A-Championship and the first division, before moving to Bristol City in the summer of 2010.

Hoban scored regularly for the reserve squad but he didn’t get an opportunity at first-team level and after a year at Ashton Gate, he returned home to Mervue United where he finished as the club’s top scorer with nine goals in 2012. 

That form caught the attention of Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny and in his first season at Oriel Park, Hoban scored 15 times as the club finished as runners up to league champions St Patrick’s Athletic. The following season, the ‘Hobanator’ scored 20 goals as Dundalk won their first Premier Division title in 19 years.

Hoban returned to England in November 2014 where he made 43 appearances for Oxford United but his second spell in the UK was disrupted with injury and after spells with Stevenage, Grimsby Town and Mansfield Town, he came home to Oriel Park ahead of the 2018 season.  

Since then, he has gone on to become the club’s all-time record league goalscorer as well as breaking the record for most goals in a single League of Ireland campaign with 29 in the double-winning 2018 season.
