Africa Day, held last weekend in Oriel Park, was a great success. On the football side we had African, Irish and other ethnic minorities mix together and get to know each other. Everybody sampled the food of both Africa and Ireland via the barbeques and foods on display . The foods were from South Africa, Congo, Nigeria and Mali and Ireland . We had a live African DJ playing music in addition to The Children's Voices of Ireland choir and a traditional Africa Bongo band.
We had a very successful and interactive workshop in the Enda McGuill Suite hosted by the NCCRI where African, Polish, Irish and many other nationalities talked about Ireland today, the changes to Ireland and the experiences they have had both settling down as an ethnic minority group and how the Irish feel about the addition of ethnic minorities to our community.
We are hoping this is going to be a national event and this year the Irish Aid helped us put on the event and finance some of the costing.
We had a great turn out with over 600 people their turning up throughout the day. The African community turned out in big numbers and we were delighted with that.
